Adrianna had an easy day. Her classes were short on mondays which meant that she had free time. Usually she went to the courtyard and hung out with friends, occasionally she would stay in her dorm and read a new novel, but today was different. Today she had decided to walk to the gym and watch the dhampirs training.
She had never watched them train, and was embarassed to admit that the one time she had seen them fighting strigoi she had frozen up and barely remembered anything other than blurs or movement and screams. She had been at St. Vladamir's barely a month into her freshman year and a couple of strigoi attacked. It had been a rare and unprepared thing..nobody had even thought they would have been so stupid to attack the Academy but they had..and they almost succeeded.
Adrianna tried to forget that day, it had not been a happy one. She lost two friends and it was unclear whether they had been turned or not. It didnt matter...turned or not they were dead either way. Adrianna shuddered when she thought about that day and quickly pushed it out of her mind. Today she needed to focus.
Adri walked to the gym and sat down on one of the bleachers. There were a few dhampirs practicing in the middle of the gym and she tried to follow their movements. They were so fast, even the younger ones were quick. She watched the way they expertly dodged and landed punches. She didn't like the violence but sometimes it was necessary.
She sat back against the bleachers and continued to watch. Wondering if there would ever be a day where she would be able to do half of the things they did.

Don’t compare me to those plain guys the first class man j o k e r He was quiet as he slipped into the gym. A few people nodded to him and to some, he nodded back and to others, Kevin Dragomir continued walking by as if he hadn't noticed. It garnered him a few scowls but he didn't really care. He just needed a place to sit out as he waited for his later classes. What a better way than to watch the training dhampirs? Well, he could be sleeping really but there were birds chirping and he didn't want to attempt to sleep through that.
He slid onto an empty bench, well, semi empty since another person was sitting there too and his eyes flickered out towards the dhampir trainees. For a moment, he wondered if his own dhampir guardian, where ever he was at that exact moment, ever went through training that he was seeing right now. Kevin absently rubbed at his eyes when the movements blurred together and the trainees started moving faster that he could keep up with. He supposed that was a dumb thought because if he hadn't gone through that same training he was watching, Kevin wouldn't have a protector.
Sometimes, he didn't really like having a protector. It made him feel weak and while he knew that his station compared to others was higher and therefore he needed more protection and his safety was first, he didn't like it. He didn't like the fact that he had to watch someone else die for him. Those people had family too. Not just him. Of course the people who considered him friend looked at him weirdly when he mentioned that and Kevin learned not to mention it to others except his guardian. Of course, when he mentioned that, his hair had been ruffled and for the first time (besides from girls he supposed), Kevin had been called cute.
He shook his head after a moment and sighed before looking back out, once again trying to keep up with fast movements. It was hard.

Adrianna watched the dhampirs closely flinching each time they got hit or landed on the mat too hard. They hadn't seemed to mind one bit. She had seen a boy take a kick to the face and it didnt even seem to faze him. The boy had just continued to fight with a huge red mark appearing on his cheek.
How could she have thought she could do what they do? She was nothing compared to them. She whined for hours if she stubbed her toe, much less if she got kicked in the face. She wondered if they were just naturally tough or if they had to build up a resistance.
Adrianna's family was royal which meant she was rarely allowed any type of alone time, but the guardian had mainly focused on the adult members of the family. With the low numbers of guardians her family only had one and she hadn't spoken to him much. He was older and mainly spoke when her father asked him questions. Since the night of her mother's death their guardian had been replaced, their last guardian was found brutally murdered.
Adri noticed a guy walking toward the bleachers and sat down. From his pale skin and demeanor she could tell he was Moroi. Adrianna had lots of friends but in a school as large as St. Vlad's it was easy to go your whole life and not know everyone in your class. Adrianna glanced over at the boy.
" How do you suppose they do it? You know...taking all the beatings day after day?"
She looked back at the people in the middle of the gym. Fighting like it was their last chance at life, but once the match was over they were smiling. It was as if they enjoyed the brutality. She couldnt imagine someone being happy about getting kicked in the face...surely she had missed something.

Don’t compare me to those plain guys the first class man j o k e r Kevin blinked, tearing his eyes away from the training dhampirs to stare at the pretty blond girl who spoke to him. For a moment, he just blinked slowly and his head tilted. It was obvious from her pale skin and the way she held herself that she was one of his own, a Moroi. That and she asked a question about the dhampirs but that yeah-duh comment aside, Kevin couldn't remember if he knew her.
St. Vlad's was a big academy and there were thousands if not more students and guardians going in and out of the entire place daily and Kevin wasn't much of a people or crowd person so it was hard for him to remember faces unless of course, his dhampir guardian shoved their faces into his. That was the older's way of getting him to make friends. Other than that, Kevin didn't actively search for them.
"I suppose they don't have pain receptors or they've fought and trained so much that they don't feel pain anymore," he paused, his eyes flickering over the trainees, watching as bruises blossomed on pale (well, their skin was darker than his own) skin and he involuntarily winced, a hand rising to rub at his cheek where a dhampir had gotten hit. It was as if he felt the pain himself. "I've never asked my own family guardians or my own about feeling pain and he doesn't talk about it much anyways,"
He smiled almost wistfully. If they really didn't feel pain then Kevin envied them. But at the same time, he pitied them. Feeling pain was well, painful but it alerted a person to injuries that they possessed. If they didn't feel pain, they wouldn't know if they were injured and they could bleed to death.
"One would think," Kevin started slowly, watching the trainees again, seeing them fight. "That they weren't trainees and that they were fighting for sport, the way these trainees smile after fighting sometimes. I wonder if fighting is that exhilarating,"
Kevin supposed that a question or comment like that shouldn't be said. Especially not for someone of his rank and station. In his own family, he supposed he wasn't the next immediate person to be the family representative or the family head but nonetheless, he was one of the ones who had that chance later one, depending how he performed in school and in life. To propose a comment or question involving any part of him in actual battle and fighting alongside his guardian was one that he should keep to himself. But he had a feeling that this young woman, probably an upperclassman, knew how he felt. Maybe at least a little bit.

Adrianna listened quietly as the boy spoke. No pain receptors, surely that couldn't be possible. They were alive and breathing so they must feel pain. Perhaps they just felt less pain, maybe the vampire blood in them caused it. She had never thought to ask her own guardian. He had always been serious rarely speaking. She had never thought to ask questions before it was too late. Before she left, and their life became a million more times complicated.
Adrianna glanced over at the Moroi beside her when he wondered what it was like. The moroi were not fighters, they were not meant to have that type of desire to hurt another living thing...at least thats what they were taught. Adrianna herself had a different point of view, and it appeared that she wasn't alone. She didn't want to outright ask if he wanted to use his element to kill...that would have been social suicide. Moroi were suppose to be genteel and caring, fighting was taboo.
Adrianna moved a little closer to the boy so any surrounding students wouldn't hear. She debated on saying anything at all, but then again if he did call her crazy she could always say she was kidding.
" Have you thought about that ? Fighting? I've wondered myself...but the only time I've ever been near a strigoi I've frozen up."
Adrianna looked away at the dhampirs fighting. It looked like a beautifully tragic symphony. Each person playing their part and executing their weapons like a second part of their body. Adrianna couldn't imagine being that in-control of anything, excluding her magic of course. Perhaps that was what it was like she wondered...so natural that it was a piece of you.
" Im Adrianna Dashkov by the way.."

Don’t compare me to those plain guys the first class man j o k e r "Perhaps," Kevin answered slowly, his eyes drifting back towards the trainees again and absently, he flattened part of his fringe over his right eye. He knew the moroi weren't much of fighters and in the long run, they were people who who were meant to be protected. He didn't like it and the one time he had "accidentally" thrown himself into a fight, Kevin ended up being permanently blinded in one eye. It amused his guardian that time when, even with bandages crossing half his face, he was still adamant on fighting with him."That I've thought about it I mean. I suppose I've mentioned it once or twice to my guardian. He was amused and maybe a little horrified,"
It was more than once or twice honestly. Initially, his guardian had thought he was just joking because honestly, a Moroi, and a Moroi of a Royal family was suggesting that they fight on the same field. It was laughable. And every time Kevin mentioned it after that, he thought he was joking. Until Kevin actually, for the lack of a better word, jumped into a fight and got himself blinded. The excuse he gave his worried family was that it was an accident. They bought it and that was when Kevin, once his family left anyways, mentioned to his guardian that he wanted to fight alongside him. He had been a little appalled and amused. Of course, since he had just jumped into a fight, the older man believed him.
Kevin looked at her through his good eye and he managed a faint grin. He knew that if his far and few friends and family were to see him, they'd think he was possessed. He rarely made friends or talked to people without his dhampir guardian's interference. And yet, here he was talking to this young woman. It was a first for him really.
"Kevin. Kevin Dragomir. It's nice to meet you Miss Adrianna,"

Adrianna nodded when he mentioned his guardian was a little horrified. The only time she had mentioned it to a dhampir they had laughed at her and thought she was genuinely joking. She hadn't and it had hurt a bit, but what could she have expected? For centuries dhampirs has guarded moroi and that was how it was. It was hard to change something that was embedded so deeply for so long.
Dragomir, so he was a royal as well. She should have guessed, whith all of the guardian numbers low it was common that the royals had guardians while the...non royals had none. She didn't agree with that fact, but that was how it was, and not everything could be changed overnight.
" I've thought about it as well, but I don't think that...when the time came...that I could ever hurt another living thing. Although they are far from the living..they once were. "
Adrianna wondered for the nine millionth time if her mother was turned. Could she hurt her mother? Could she cause her mother pain even if her mother wanted her blood? She didn't think she could.

Don’t compare me to those plain guys the first class man j o k e r "I'm sure that at some point, most Royals do think about that. Well, maybe some of the newer generation ones anyways," Kevin said simply. His hand left his fringe and he pulled up his knee so his foot rested on the bench and his leg was pressed lightly against his chest. He didn't mention names because he knew of the newer generation and the ones in his own generation, it was rumored that some didn't like being protected and at the same time, he remembered hearing of another who who actually liked being protected. Kevin, was very obviously not within that category and his blind eye was proof.
"Do you fear running into people you've seen die? Is that why you might not be able to hurt them when the time comes Miss Dashkov?" a touchy question to anyone he knew but he must ask it anyways. For himself, Kevin never really thought about it. The Strigoi were the undead and he knew that when they reached that level, anyone, anyone at all, they were probably not going to be the same person they once knew. "I think about that. About running into family that have died but I think in that time, I shouldn't try to keep the dead alive but rather keep the alive alive because the dead live forever in memories don't they?"
He supposed that they should probably change the topic quickly if his comment made her unhappy. Kevin wasn't the type of person to be able to deal with unhappy people in general. He was pretty bad with that to be honest. Usually he let the people around him fix that problem. That annoyed his guardian. A lot.

When Kevin spoke about being afraid of seeing those who she loved as strigoi Adri was caught off guard. He was absolutely correct. She just couldn't see harming her mother. She had laid awake at night picturing her mother with red eyes, pale skin and an evil smile. She had pictured her attacking, and wanting nothing more than to take adrianna's life away, but even then she still couldn't do it. She would kill herself before she could harm her mother.
" Yes actually. I just can't see harming someone so close. Someone who gave you life, and raised you. How could you kill them so cruelly? "
When he had mentioned that the dead were dead and they should be remembered as they had been when they were alive she nodded. It was a true statement and one she wished she could adopt, but she couldn't it was one of those things that were easier said than done.
" I agree, they are dead and should be treated as so, but when you see someone who you think were taken, ripped from you. Then you see them talking and walking....I just don't think I could send them back into the world of death again, the world where they're gone again. "
